I buy fresh cut flowers for my home every week, preferably seasonal flowers. Although I’m a ‘summer person’ in terms of the weather, when it comes to the availability of flowers, I love the autumn...because nerines are my all-time favourite flowers, and they are in abundance at that time of year.

For me, the nerine is a beautiful, contemporary flower that goes well in the modern, somewhat minimalist interior design of our home. Not only does the flower have a gorgeous colour, it has a wonderful shape too. Elegant yet intense, which is further accentuated by its sturdy green stem.

I prefer to buy a bouquet of nerines only. A plain bouquet of pink nerines, for example, looks striking in our predominantly white interior. In my opinion, a nerine needs to be given room to look its best – only then does its unique beauty truly become apparent.

My absolute favourite is the Nerine bowdenii – not only because of its colour and shape, but also on a practical level: this variety is readily available from our local florist for a considerable number of months. No matter how long the nerine season lasts, it’s never long enough as far as I’m concerned!
